Public Speaking and Member of the Year competitions
by Stephen Paine, Events and Social Officer

23rd September, 2007

North Downs did extremely well at the county's Member of the Year and Public Speaking competitions.

We entered a senior and a junior member into the Kent Member of Year class, and three people made up our intermediate public speaking team.

Candidates for member of the year had to put forward a portfolio about themselves showing who they are, what they've done, and why they are running to be considered Kent YFC's member of the year. The members were then interviewed by Katie Baines, former county chairperson, who chose a winner from both the junior and senior entries.

For intermediate public speaking, two team members had to be "panellists", the other a chairperson. The team were required to hold a debate, answering questions that were kept from the panellists until asked by the chairperson once the mock meeting had commenced.

Other clubs taking part were Westlands School, from Sittingbourne, Oldborough Manor School, from Maidstone, and Mascalls School, from Paddock Wood.

Our entries were:

Intermediate Public Speaking: Gina Somai (chairperson), Samantha Stevens (panellist), Stephen Paine (panellist)

Senior member of the year: Stephen Paine

Junior member of the year: Samantha Stevens

After a fun day competing and trying new things, we finished first in senior member of the year, and came second in the public speaking. This is the first time we've done the competition, but we can't wait to try it again next year!
